The Mother Road
A Highway Through American History
Route 66 officially began in 1926, linking existing roads into a highway that crossed roughly 2,400 miles of the country. It became a corridor of migration, commerce, military transport, family travel, and opportunity.
Roadside diners, motor courts, service stations, and small communities grew alongside it. Although the highway was officially decommissioned in 1985, its landscapes and stories remain an enduring part of American culture.

The 2026 event honors both the centennial of the Mother Road and the amateur-radio community that has kept its story traveling across the airwaves every year.
Consecutive Annual Events
Route 66 On The Air began in 2000 through the Northern Arizona DX Association. Its annual tradition has continued without interruption, reaching its 27th consecutive running during the 2026 centennial year.

Based in San Bernardino, California, CBARC carries the event forward by coordinating participating amateur-radio clubs and special-event stations along the historic Route 66 corridor—from the Chicago area to Santa Monica.
